Abstract

This study aims to analyze the dialectical relationship between the Qur’an and local culture in shaping the interpretive patterns of Nusantara scholars. The study is based on the assumption that Qur’anic interpretation is not merely a textual understanding of revelation but is also influenced by the social, cultural, and intellectual contexts of interpreters. This research employs a qualitative approach using a library research method. The data sources include classical and modern works of Nusantara Qur’anic exegesis, such as Tafsir Al-Azhar by Hamka, Tafsir Al-Ibriz by Bisri Mustofa, and Marāḥ Labīd by Nawawi al-Bantani, along with relevant academic literature on Nusantara tafsir and local wisdom. Data were analyzed through content analysis using the sociology of tafsir and contextual hermeneutic approaches. The findings reveal that local culture significantly influences the characteristics of Nusantara tafsir through three main aspects: the use of local languages, the integration of cultural values, and the contextualization of Qur’anic messages within community life. Hamka represents a socio-moral interpretive approach influenced by Malay-Minangkabau culture, Bisri Mustofa reflects Javanese cultural expressions through language and symbols, while Nawawi al-Bantani demonstrates the influence of pesantren traditions through fiqh-oriented and educational approaches. This study confirms that local culture is not merely a social background of interpretation but an epistemological element that shapes how Nusantara scholars understand and communicate Qur’anic messages contextually.
