Abstract

The low critical thinking skills of elementary school students and the limited learning media capable of stimulating higher-order thinking are the problems that motivated this study. This research aimed to develop an interactive edu-game-based learning design that is valid, practical, and effective for improving the critical thinking skills of elementary school students. A Research and Development (R&D) approach was employed using the 4-D model (Define, Design, Develop, Disseminate). The subjects were 28 fifth-grade students at an Islamic elementary school, while product feasibility was assessed by material, media, and language experts. The instruments comprised validation sheets, teacher and student response questionnaires, and an essay-type critical thinking test based on the indicators of interpretation, analysis, evaluation, inference, and explanation. Validity and practicality data were analyzed using percentage techniques, whereas effectiveness was analyzed using the N-gain test. The results showed validation scores of 85% (material), 88% (media), and 86% (language), all categorized as highly valid. Practicality was highly practical based on teacher (90%) and student (92%) responses. Effectiveness was indicated by an increase in the mean score from 58 (pretest) to 82 (posttest) with an N-gain of 0.71 (high category). Thus, the interactive edu-game-based learning design is feasible for improving the critical thinking skills of elementary students.
