Peran Ulama Priangan Terhadap Perkembangan Islam di Wilayah Jawa Barat Abad Ke-18 Hingga Abad Ke-20

Abstract

This study examines the role of Priangan ulama in the development of Islam in West Java from the 18th to the 20th century. In the 18th century, Priangan ulama played a crucial role in spreading Islamic teachings. In the 19th century, large Islamic boarding schools in Priangan developed rapidly. They became centres of religious studies such as fiqh, tafsir, hadith, and Sufism, giving rise to a Sundanese Islamic intellectual network. In the 20th century, the Priangan region became the centre of large Islamic organisations such as the Islamic Community Association (Persatuan Umat Islam), Persatuan Islam (Islamic Union), and Al-Itihadul Islamiyah in the fight against Dutch colonialism. Priangan ulama from the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries contributed to the spread of Islam by establishing large Islamic boarding schools (pesantren), joining resistance against colonialism, and developing Islamic education suited to the needs of the times. Priangan ulama served not only as religious teachers but also as shapers of the local community's religious identity, creating a distinctive Islamic character relevant to the social life of the West Javanese people. This research uses a historical method with four stages, namely heuristics, criticism, interpretation, and historiography, which are combined with a qualitative approach so that the role of Priangan scholars in the Islamization of West Java from the 18th to the 20th century can be explained comprehensively.
