Abstract

Bullying prevention requires attention not only to disciplinary rules but also to students' everyday experiences of safety, dignity, and belonging. This qualitative case study examines how religious values inform a student well-being-based character education strategy at SMP Negeri 1 Japah. Interview accounts from school teachers, Islamic Religious Education teachers, Guidance and Counseling teachers, homeroom teachers, and students were examined alongside observations covering 15 indicators in five aspects. Thematic analysis identified four connected dimensions: religious habituation, relational ethics, preventive protection, and educational responses. Sekolah Sisan Ngaji, Qur'an recitation, congregational prayer, charity, handshaking, classroom agreements, anti-bullying orientation, and teacher guidance provide opportunities to practice respect and care. However, accounts of teasing using parents' names show that religious routines do not consistently translate into respectful peer interaction. The study contributes a student well-being lens for evaluating character education through perceived safety, acceptance, and responses to harmful speech rather than the frequency of religious activities alone. As a single-site study using summarized interview accounts and time-limited observation, the findings describe perceived practices and risks; they do not establish causal effects or demonstrate a measurable reduction in bullying
